A towering native perennial with graceful yellow blooms, Rudbeckia laciniata, also known as cutleaf coneflower or green-headed coneflower, is a beloved species for both people and pollinators. It thrives in moist meadows, rain gardens, and wild borders, sending up sturdy stems topped with golden, nodding flowers from mid-summer through early fall. Bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects flock to its blooms, while birds enjoy its seed heads later in the season.

Beyond its beauty, this plant has a lesser-known culinary role. Young spring shoots and tender greens were traditionally foraged and cooked as a pot herb by various Indigenous groups, particularly the Cherokee, who referred to it as “Sochan.” When harvested early and cooked properly (as you would with other wild greens), the young leaves make a nourishing, mild-flavored green. A culturally significant and ecologically valuable species, it’s a great fit for food forests, permaculture gardens, and rewilded spaces alike.
